On January 23, 2025, Justice pour Tous Internationale (JPTI) participated in a crucial side event at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, focusing on the urgent need to combat torture and enhance human rights in Kazakhstan. Esteemed organizers, distinguished panelists, and participants gathered to discuss key strategies for promoting equality and justice.
JPTI extends its sincere appreciation to the panelists, including Mr. Ussen Suleimen, Mr. Marat Sarsembayev, and notably Mr. Artur Lastayev, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Kazakhstan. Their insightful presentations highlighted the ongoing efforts to advance human rights within the country.
A central theme of the event was JPTI's strong call for the Government of Kazakhstan to adopt a comprehensive law on equality. Drawing inspiration from successful models in European countries like the UK, France, Germany, and Switzerland, such legislation is essential for addressing systemic discrimination. It would foster inclusivity and serve as a vital safeguard against torture and ill-treatment.
Aligning with international standards, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention Against Torture, this law would significantly strengthen Kazakhstan’s human rights framework and ensure equal protection for all citizens.
JPTI also commended the Commissioner for Human Rights for progress toward aligning with the Paris Principles. Achieving ‘A’ status accreditation would not only enhance the authority of the Commissioner but also demonstrate Kazakhstan’s commitment to upholding international human rights standards. The adoption of a robust equality law and the attainment of ‘A’ status for the Commissioner are complementary steps toward establishing a more just and equitable society in Kazakhstan. Together, these initiatives will strengthen human rights protections and enhance Kazakhstan’s standing in the international community.
JPTI remains dedicated to supporting these efforts through expertise and capacity-building initiatives. By working collaboratively with local authorities and organizations, we aim to contribute to a future where human rights are respected and upheld for all. As we move forward, JPTI calls upon all stakeholders to join us in advocating for meaningful change that promotes equality and justice in Kazakhstan. Together, we can create a society that values and protects the rights of every individual.
