📢 Submission to UN Special Procedures on Gaza Crisis and the Right to Self-Defense

🗓️ On 10 November 2023, Justice pour Tous Internationale (JPTi) submitted an urgent communication to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Ms. Francesca Albanese, and to the members of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel.
Amid the deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza following the events of October 2023, JPTi called on UN mandate holders to urgently address the asymmetry in the international legal narrative concerning the right to self-defense and self-determination. The submission underscored the grave civilian toll of over 10,000 Palestinian deaths—more than 4,000 of them children—amid systematic restrictions on humanitarian access, rising allegations of war crimes, and the alarming silence of key UN bodies.
JPTi urged the Commission and Special Rapporteur to initiate a principled examination of international legal frameworks that govern the right to self-defense in occupied territories, stressing the necessity of equitable recognition of this right for both Israel and Palestine. The appeal further highlighted the international criminalization of non-violent political expression, including the misuse of anti-terror legislation to silence peaceful protest and support for Palestinian self-determination.
We reiterated our call for the immediate convening of a special session of the Human Rights Council and urged Member States—particularly within the Western European and Others Group (WEOG)—to halt the stigmatization and prosecution of peaceful advocates and human rights defenders.
