📅 21 July 2022📍 Geneva, Switzerland
Justice pour Tous Internationale (JPTi) submitted its first formal communication to the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Special Procedures Mandate Holders on 21 July 2022.
This submission was made on behalf of Mr. Khidirnazar Allakulov, a distinguished economist, former rector, and opposition leader, alongside ten other political activists, journalists, and human rights defenders affiliated with the Social Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (SDPU). It addressed serious and ongoing violations of the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly, association, expression, and political participation in Uzbekistan.
The complaint documented unlawful police raids, threats, judicial harassment, surveillance, evictions, and the denial of registration of an independent political party, despite the State’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). It emphasized the discrepancy between Uzbekistan’s voluntary pledges as a Vice-President of the UN Human Rights Council and its domestic suppression of opposition voices.
By engaging the Special Rapporteurs on peaceful assembly, human rights defenders, freedom of expression, privacy, torture, judicial independence, arbitrary detention, and discrimination against women, JPTi called for international scrutiny and intervention to safeguard civic space in Uzbekistan.
This initiative marked a foundational step in JPTi’s international litigation efforts to uphold democratic rights and protect political dissent.
